Hurricane Relief and Web Journal
CDW, CDW-G and coworkers are giving more than $1.5 million in cash and in-kind donations including funds, food, supplies and technology to help hurricane victims. As part of this effort, the company held a fund drive in which CDW matched coworker donations 4-to-1. Coworkers also voted to donate money earmarked for this year's Holiday Party to the relief efforts. In addition, the company dispatched a mobile communications unit to Gulfport, Miss. to serve as FEMA's law enforcement command center. Two CDW-G coworkers traveled with the command center and logged their daily activities online.

About the Food and Fund Drive |

Immediately following the news of the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina, CDW initiated a coworker fund drive for the American Red Cross, America's Second Harvest, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army organizations to provide assistance to the Hurricane Katrina victims. The company matched all coworker donations 4-to-1 for the first $100,000 raised and 1-to-1 for the second $100,000.
In addition to the fund drive, CDW initiated the "Road Trip for Recovery," food drive. In partnership with America's Second Harvest, coworkers and surrounding community members were asked to help fill a semi-tractor trailer, normally loaded with technology goods, with non-perishable, shelf-stable food items for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The truck, supplied by AIT Worldwide Logistics, Inc., of Itasca, Illinois, was parked in the CDW Vernon Hills parking lot and staffed by CDW coworkers. Items collected in the drive included baby diapers and formula, enriched replacement drinks such as Ensure, individual ready-to-eat food with pop tops (Jello, pudding, chili, etc.) and energy or granola bars.
All of the items collected over the week-long event were taken to the Greater Chicago Food Depository for sorting and delivery to points designated by America's Second Harvest.
CDW's second "Road Trip for Recovery" food drive provided continued support to relief and replenishment efforts. In partnership with Vernon Hills High School, CDW collected non-perishable food items through October 17, 2005 with donations again going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository for delivery to hurricane impacted areas.
Between the two food drives held for hurricane victims, a total of 16,474 lbs. of food and supply items were collected and delivered to the Greater Chicago Food Depository for distribution to those impacted by the hurricane. In addition, numerous coworkers volunteered their time to staff the truck by packaging and loading the donations.

About the Truck |

 |
Cities throughout the Gulf region sustained significant damage from the recent hurricanes, losing power and communication capabilities. In order to help the government rebuild infrastructure in the devastated Gulf region, CDW dispatched Next Marketing's mobile command truck equipped with more than 50 laptops donated by HP, and a satellite-ready Internet connection. In addition, two CDW-G engineers, Phil Simerly and Spencer Cagle, traveled in the trailer to handle the configuration and manage the IT infrastructure.
The truck departed from Atlanta, Ga., headed for a law enforcement base camp in Gulfport, Miss., where the relief team could provide FEMA and local officers with access to vital communications tools including computers, the Internet and a technical support staff. The base camp in Gulfport housed an average of 400 officers from more than 16 different law enforcement agencies including the US Marshals; Mississippi, Kansas and Kentucky Bureaus of Investigation; and Capitol Hill Police. These officers used the mobile command center to process more than 1.22 Gigabytes of information per day to find missing persons and solve criminal cases in the region.
Through the use of the truck’s satellite access, officials successfully cleared 693 of the 781 missing persons cases assigned to the camp.
During their stay with the mobile command center, Simerly and Cagle logged and reported their daily activities, sightings and overall progress.
