Pennsylvania Moves to a 21st-Century Learning Model with Classrooms for the Future
High School Learning Initiative Completes Second Year; Ensures Continuing Statewide High School Reform
VERNON HILLS, Ill. - April 28, 2008 - CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a wholly owned subsidiary of CDW Corporation and leading source of Information Technology (IT) solutions to educators and governments, today announced that it has completed technology implementations in the second year of Pennsylvania’s Classrooms for the Future program, which includes 231 school districts across the state. During the last two school years, CDW-G has worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to deliver over 81,900 laptops, 4,075 interactive whiteboards, targeted professional development and myriad technology tools to enhance learning at 257 schools.
"Classrooms for the Future has significantly accelerated the infusion of technology into Pennsylvania’s high school curriculum," said Bob Kirby, senior director, K-12 education, CDW-G. "Governor Edward Rendell’s initiative is an excellent model for incorporating mobile, interactive, and multimedia technology into the curriculum. Coupled with continuous professional development, Pennsylvania high schools are leaving the static, 19th-century classroom behind in favor of 21st-century tools with a 21st-century teaching platform."
Hamburg, Pa. Area School District
Teacher enthusiasm for technology is contagious in the Hamburg Area School District. "Our teachers are in awe of the interactive whiteboards’ capabilities," noted Cheryl Potteiger, the district’s assistant superintendent. "The whiteboards offer assessments, resources and dynamic instructional tools that encourage teachers and students to collaborate and interact." Seeing the technology’s immediate success in the high school, the district plans to install interactive whiteboards in every core classroom in each of the district’s six schools by the end of the 2008-2009 school year, giving the district’s 2,700 students and 185 teachers the opportunity to benefit from 21st-century learning tools.
Professional development for teachers and administrators has been critical to the success of Classrooms for the Future in Hamburg. A key factor is the district’s full-time Classrooms for the Future coach, Teresa Freiwald, who serves as a constant resource for the teachers. Freiwald encourages teachers to use the technology, and she helps teachers identify new approaches to lessons through seamless technology integration.
The School District of Jenkintown
"The teachers and students at the School District of Jenkintown have embraced Classrooms for the Future by taking a collaborative and interactive approach to learning," said Jim Cummins, director of technology. "To facilitate this approach, our Classrooms for the Future coach created the DrakePond, an online learning portal that supports each of our high school’s subject areas."
Named for the school’s mascot, the DrakePond enables teachers and students to create and share resources, including class wikis and student blogs. For example, nearly every day social studies students upload videos relevant to the material they are learning, and students in an English class record and post scenes from Shakespeare’s "King Lear." The students provide new perspectives on the material for other classes and ultimately bringing learning to life with technology.
